14:00 – 16:00 – Visiting Berca Mud Volcanoes, Buzău County
The Berca Mud Volcanoes located in Buzău County represent the most famous geological monument in Romania. The most spectacular features are the mud mounds, which are small volcano-shaped structures, a few meters high, formed by the eruption of mud and natural gases.
The gas from the soil deposits goes to the surface, trained by the groundwater, generating craters and cones with the appearance of volcanoes. However, they are nothing more than mud formations that imitate real volcanoes on a smaller scale.

Day Tour S2: Pietroasa - Istrița Research and Development for Viticulture, Winemaking and Fruit Growing Visits
08th of June, 2024
08:00 AM – Departure from the USAMV – Agronomie Herăstrău Campus (Blvd. Mărăști 59- Building A Rectorate)
10:00 – Arrival at Istrița Research and Development Station for Fruit Growing, Buzău County
The year 1893 marks the beginning of the Istriţa Fruit Nursery, whose initial task was to multiply the vine seeding material resistant to phylloxera attacks which had destroyed the Romanian viticultural material in only 10 years. At the same time, it was aimed to develop the fruit-growing patrimony in the Curvature Sub-Carpathians region. In 1895 there already was a rich collection of types from almost all fruit tree and shrub species and parent stock saplings were produced and used in grafting valuable types.
The nursery fields and the existing fruit tree collections served as study material for generations of students, but also for researchers who worked here overtime. After its reintegration in 2005, as a component of the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, the Istriţa Farm embarked on a new complex modernisation and refurbishment process.
Every summer, the Istrița Cherry Feast is being held, an occasion when students, academics and visitors have the opportunity to participate in visits and practical lessons held in the field and to take part in tastings of cherry varieties. The participants of this visit will also have the opportunity to join this event and to try the cherries grown at the Istriţa Research and Development Station for Fruit Growing.

11:00 - Arrival at Pietroasa Research and Development Station for Viticulture and Winemaking, Buzău County
Pietroasele commune is best known for its archaeological thesaurus - the Pietroasele Treasure also known as Cloșca cu puii de aur (en. the Hen with golden chicks) –a late fourth-century Gothic treasure discovered in 1837, that included around twenty-two objects of gold.
But Pietroasa's real treasure today is wine.
These "treasures" were with more than 120 medals in national and international competitions, more especially for sweet wines, some spices, for which Pietroasa has an unsurpassed vocation. After becoming affiliated, in 2005, to the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, the university put two "bricks", rebuild the Station: young plantations were established and modern principles in winemaking were ensured, while making sure, at the same time, that students can gain both practical skills and theoretical knowledge.
Here, wine tastings and visits are organized, where the technological workflow and equipment, as well as the impressive historical collection of over 100,000 bottles can be viewed. Recently, Pietroasa Research and Development Station for Viticulture and Winemaking, resumed trade with its exceptional wines under its own label - "Pietroasa veche."

10:00 –10:40 Arrive at Nicolae Grigorescu Memorial House
The painter spent the last years of his life (1904-1907) in this house, where his final studio was also located. Grigorescu lived in Câmpina, intermittently, starting from 1871, and settled in the town permanently from 1890, captivated by the surrounding landscapes.
The beauty of the plains near the ruins inspired many of Nicolae Grigorescu's paintings. The meadows he painted are those where Constantin Brâncoveanu spent his childhood—here he painted "The Ox Cart" (one of the 100 that exist). Nicolae Grigorescu depicted elements of rural life (ox carts, country landscapes, peasants) in his works, which were highly appreciated both during his lifetime and after his death, so much so that his drawings of peasant women and the artist's signature appeared on some Romanian banknotes from the period 1936 – 1947 (of 1,000, 10,000, and 5,000,000 lei).

11:00 – 11:40 – Iulia Hașdeu Castle/Museum
The Iulia Hașdeu Castle in Câmpina is also known as the "Temple of the Spirit," a place where the piano plays by itself and Iulia’s voice can be heard occasionally. Here, mornings reveal gathered carpets and feathers fallen from gala hats, as if after a dance-filled evening. The writer and historian Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu built this edifice between 1893 and 1896, in memory of his daughter, Iulia Hașdeu. This became Bogdan Petriceicu Hașdeu's refuge after the premature death of his daughter. The purpose of this place was to facilitate communication between the father and his daughter through séances held at this location.
Iulia Hașdeu was a prodigy; by two and a half years old she could read, by four she was writing, by five she composed her first poems, by eight she passed primary school exams, and by 11 she finished high school at Sfântul Sava in Bucharest. At 16, she was studying at the Faculty of Letters at the Sorbonne University in Paris, being the first Romanian student to attend the Sorbonne. Tragically, she fell ill with tuberculosis at 18 and passed away at 19 in 1888. At 20, Iulia Hașdeu would have been the first female Doctor of Letters at the Faculty of Letters of the Sorbonne University in Paris.

12:00 – 13:00 – Brebu Royal Court
Composed of the Royal House, the enclosure wall, the bell tower, and the Brebu Monastery, the complex, erected by Matei Basarab, has been declared an architectural monument. The construction began with the Royal House and the defensive wall, completed by 1641. At the same time, the construction of the church began, which was completed in 1690 under Constantin Brâncoveanu. The complex is surrounded by thick defensive walls, equipped with battlements and watchtowers. The 6.5 m high walls have remained almost intact and are made of exposed brick and stone. The entrance tower has also remained intact.

17:00 – 17:40 The Little Trianon of Florești
The architecture of the Cantacuzino Palace in Florești is similar to that of the Petit Trianon at Versailles, which is why this building is also known as "The Little Trianon". Its construction was carried out with the help of builders and masons from France, to ensure that the palace closely resembled the original model.
The Little Trianon of Florești was erected by Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino (nicknamed "The Nabob") and designed by the architect Ion Berindei. Before the construction of the Little Trianon, it seems that The Nabob had called upon a renowned French landscape architect, Emile Pinard, to restore the existing park and gardens on the estate.
